Heiffhem - Experimental music project

About Heiffhem

Heiffhem is an experimental dark folk/noise/drone music project with a dark tone and a focus on ambiance.
My music is made using guitars (cigar box guitar and baritone mostly), guitar loops, drones, and various noise sources (distorted voices and audio, bows, musical boxes...) captured through my guitar pickup or even voice captured through a harp microphone and processed through various effect pedals.
> My music is mostly improvised and recorded live in my home studio.

July 12th 2021: experimenting and recording some new material

I'm composing and recording some new music. I'm experimenting with audio from a fm radio and an old mp3 player captured through my cigar box guitar pickup.
I'm watching Twin Peaks as well as some other David Lynch movies and it has a huge influence on what I play at the moment...

June 14th 2021: difficult times...

A lot of things happened since the last update of this website :

  • I've built another cigar box guitar. It's a 5 string instruments inspired by Keith Rochards guitars. I plan to add an electric pickup in the future.
  • One of my virtual servers died during the OVH fire in March so I had to get a new one and rebuilt the services from scratch.
  • I've upgraded my other cigar box guitar in order to avoid the strings to cut into the wood.
  • I'm testing some softwares to put my music on my own server and to a get rid of my soundcloud account...
  • I've recorded some new material since january, but none of it has been published yet. This is mainly caused by the covid-19 situation and the surge of work due to teleworking. In addition one of my grandmothers died a few weeks ago... This year has been quite difficult...
January 18th 2021: new song

I've posted a new song. I hope you'll enjoy it.

January 3rd 2021: 3-string bowed-lyre

A talharpa inspired acoustic cigar box

I've finished my 3 string talharpa. It took me about 2 days to complete.
I used concert ukulele strings and tuned it to open D major (ADF#)
It doesn’t sound great bowed (so it’s not yet a talharpa)… But when played with a bottleneck and a guitar pick, it sounds great, a bit like a koto !
I'll try with another kind of rosin (more suitable for nylon strings) and maybe make my own bow.

December 27th 2020: Upgrading my studio and building a new instrument

I've upgraded my homestudio by adding a good condenser microphone. This will be a great replacement for the line output of my amplifier which have a lot of annoying noise. In addition this microphone will allow me to record some accoustic instruments.

A condener microphone miking a small amplifier cabinet

I'm also building a small bowed string instruments inpired by the scandinavian tagelharpa. It will have two or three strings (I'm not sure yet) and probably be tuned to open D.

Studio/Recording

Most of my music is iprovised and recorded live by myself in my home studio I call « Studio LaRamée » located in Belgium.

For recording I usually use the following gear :

  • a solid state amplifier head or a bass combo amplifier for guitars
  • a 4 tracks mixer for other instruments
  • a mouth harp microphone into a guitar amplifier for voice, percussion, noises…
  • a Drum Thing mini by Electro Faustus for percussions
  • a condenser microphone
  • a Zoom digital audio recorder

I edit my tracks using Audacity running on my Ubuntu laptop.

I play on my home made cigar box guitar and my baritone electric guitar made from salvaged wood by Re-Bel guitars , both played through a bunch of effects (mainly some reverb, delay, chorus, distortion, tremolo, and a looper).
Sometimes i also use a couple of cheap analogue synthesizers.
